Common Ideas
Andrew Allsopp
“If everyone undertook to form all his own opinions and to seek for truth by isolated paths struck out by himself alone, it would follow that no considerable number of men would ever unite in any common belief.”- Alexis Tocqueville
In Society we have standards. Not the standard by which we must hold in school but in the sense that many people share morals values and opinions, this is what creates society and what helps push us forward. Americans share values that are laid out in the constitution, it sets a base line of common values and how we conduct ourselves within society. For society to prosper there must be common held beliefs within this community such as are held in our constitution, so that the people in it may work towards a common goal to create a society that holds the same predominant ideas .
America exists the way it does because it is made up of people who vote on a topic such as immigration or gay marriage based on ideas and values that they share with a part of the part of the population. Our Country is a democracy that is laid out in our constitution. The Constitution contains certain inalienable rights that every American has. The constitution gives people common ground to stand on with the rest of society, creating a basis for common held belief that we are all free and equal.
In chapter two of the book Democracy in America By Alexis Tocqueville, He says “When the inhabitants of a democratic country compares himself with all those about him, he feels with pride that he is the equal of any one of them”. (P3pp2) The people who make up this democracy each play an individual role and each individual can affect the society. But people are still ruled by the majority and the individual is affected when a vote is made that will affect the general population. As citizens people can agree or disagree with this vote but they are still held to it by the laws of the land in which they live because that is the predominant idea among the people.
People are in the U.S. are held together by the predominant idea that we are all free and equal in our country and we are governed by the laws laid out in our constitution. However the biggest predominant idea is that we are held together by a majority because without common ideas to share our society can’t be whole. There are of course outliers in every situation a small or sometimes even significant portion of the population may disagree with something but since a greater amount of people agree it that becomes the norm. Maybe people are in America are held together not by a specific predominant idea, But by the idea that we must find common ground to flourish.

4th amendment mini project
Project Reflection
For the 4th amendment mini project We created an informative video about some of the things we have been learning in class involving how to correctly exercise our 4th amendment rights when interacting with police. We spent about a week prior to creating the project studying all bout the fourth amendment, how to protect from being unlawfully searched, what is reasonable suspicion and what is probable cause and what protections come directly from the fourth amendment. We then created an engaging and entertaining video on the subject depicting both what not to do and what to do when interacting with the police.
This project was very easy for me to connect with, we all live in America and we all are protected by its constitution. The problem that I see these days is that young people don’t know their rights or how to exercise them which I think is very important to being part of the 21st century. This project was very easy to understand and work with because I wanted to make video that made light of interacting with police yet also very informative. This was a fun project for me to do I feel like I learned a lot about the 4th amendment even from creating the video I feel like while acting out what and what not to do I thought more deeply about what might give probable cause and how being calm and professional with officers helps a lot more than being rude and jumpy. I’m very glad that I got to do this project It is very important to me to know how to conduct myself with the police and I want to know my rights so that I can’t be taken advantage of on the streets.
