Week one down! I have really been enjoying my experience here at KDUR so far. I had out of the ordinary start to the week based on Bryant being sick on the first day of me being here but I quickly learned how that is the norm here is a very on the edge of your seat experience. There have been constant things coming up seemingly at random. Bryant and Jon have kept me quite busy previewing music and I am beginning to understand what makes a good show on air and if there’s no one present to DJ what they do to keep the radio on air 24 hours a day. As a Musician Naturally, I Really enjoy listening to music and over the course of this week I have listened to a lot of music whether it was previewing music for my show today or simply listening to what was on the air while doing other work was highly enjoyable.
At this point I have started to work on creating concert which Bryant usually makes each week as an auditory listing of the concerts in town in the next week. It is a bit of a challenge but I already know how to use Digital audio work stations pretty well so orienting myself with adobe audition is merely the same thing with some small differences in layout and ability in operating systems. On Wednesday morning, Bryant showed me how to make an intro and outro to the concert calendar. Then on Thursday we went into a production room and worked through the body of making a concert calendar and putting music onto it to be ready to be put on air. During this the challenging part of this was speaking in a way that would be concise and refined. There were multiple occasions where I had trouble saying a date well and having my sentence structure flow. But in the end Bryant helped me to create a refined concert calendar that will play all next week.
Over the course of this week while preparing for my first radio show, I have listened to tons of music. KDUR has walls of CD’s that are packed into just about every corner at the radio station. The greatest part of it for me is that I don’t like to limit myself to one genre of music, I really like it all and so it has been great for me to be handed CD’s every day that ranges from jazz to punk rock to funk to reggae to electronic and beyond. It is great to listen to music without a bias because it gives a better choice of music to the people listening to KDUR. I have written down every artist and album that I have listened to and previewed this has not only expanded what genres I enjoy but has shown me many different sub styles of music within styles.
Since I have only been here a short time it has not been to labor intensive yet, mostly getting to know the staff and surroundings in the station which is located in the student union building of the fort. I am looking forward to learning a lot about how the station raises funds and operates and obviously play a lot more music. So until next week,
Drew
